Welcome and Introduction
Richard Bunton, Dunedin Hospital
Richard Bunton’s practice is adult cardiothoracic surgery. His main passion is the teaching and mentoring of trainee surgeons. He was awarded the certificate for outstanding services to the RACS Board of Cardiothoracic Surgery for his roles as an Examiner (9 years), Board member (4 years), Deputy Chairman (4 years), and Chairman (4 years). He graduated from the University of Otago in 1976 and was awarded FRACS in 1983. He travelled to the USA for postgraduate fellowships at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he met Dr. David Adams, and Boston Children’s Hospital, then onto the UK for a Senior Registrar position at the Wessex Cardiothoracic unit. In the UK he gained FRCSEd.(C/Th). He returned to Dunedin in 1986 and became Head of the Cardiothoracic unit and later Chief Medical Officer. At the invitation of the New Zealand Minister of Health he led the establishment of a cardiothoracic unit in Christchurch. He took a surgical team to China for a number of years to teach Coronary Artery Surgery as part of a program sponsored by Project Hope. He is Chairman of a trust that convenes three educational courses, two being 3-week courses, and one a 4-day course, for surgical trainees in Australasia. In 2023 he was awarded a Royal honour (ONZM) form his contribution to cardiothoracic surgery.
David Adams, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, New York
Dr. David H. Adams is the Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Professor and Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Cardiac Surgeon-in-Chief of the Mount Sinai Health System. He is internationally recognized as a thought leader in the field of mitral valve reconstruction, and leads a specialized team that performs over 400 mitral valve operations per year. He is a co-author of the acclaimed valve textbook, Carpentier’s Reconstructive Valve Surgery, and has co-invented multiple valve repair prostheses used throughout the world. He is the author of over 300 peer-reviewed publications, and is an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Adams was the 99th President of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.

Ismail El-Hamamsy, Mount Sinai Hospital
Ismail El-Hamamsy, MD PhD
Ismail El-Hamamsy, MD, PhD, FRCSC, is System Director of Aortic Surgery at the Mount Sinai Health System and is honored to serve as Mount Sinai’s inaugural Randall B. Griepp Professor of Surgery. His principal surgical focus is aortic root reconstructive surgery in young adults, including patients with heritable and connective tissue disorders.
Before joining Mount Sinai, Dr. El-Hamamsy directed the Montreal Heart Institute’s aortic surgery program, one of the busiest complex aortic surgery programs in North America, and was Associate Professor at the University of Montreal. He founded the Montreal Heart Institute’s Aortic and Connective Tissue Clinics, and helped establish several Ross programs across North America, Europe and Asia. Altogether, he has performed more than 700 Ross procedures and valve-sparing operations, which are among the world’s most complex and challenging aortic surgeries.
Dr. El-Hamamsy completed his medical education and cardiac surgery training at the University of Montreal, followed by a 4-year fellowship in London under the mentorship of Sir Magdi Yacoub. During this period, he completed a PhD entitled “The Living Aortic Valve” at Imperial College London. He currently leads a research team exploring the natural history of aortic disease, as well as innovative therapeutic approaches to diseases of the aorta and aortic valve.
Dr. El-Hamamsy has authored or co-authored several book chapters, as well as more than 150 scientific articles in The Lancet, Circulation, JACC and other leading peer-reviewed journals. He serves on the Editorial Boards of The American Heart Journal, Journal of Heart Valve Disease, Structural Heart and the Canadian Journal of Cardiology, and is an elected member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. He also serves on the Heart Valve Society’s Board of Directors, and – among other humanitarian projects – helped establish the Aswan Heart Center in Egypt.
Paul Bannon, Royal Prince Alfred
Professor Paul Bannon is the Chairman of the Baird Institute for Applied Heart and Lung Surgical Research. He is the Head of Clinical Trials and Translational Research for the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney and holds the Professorial Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery as well as the Bosch Chair of Surgery, University of Sydney. He is the Co-Chair of the Institute of Academic Surgery at RPAH, the Chair of the Robotics Steering Committee for SLHD and the Director of the Translational Hybrid Theatre at the Charles Perkins Centre. He has performed over 7000 adult cardiac surgical procedures ranging from coronary artery bypass to complex aortic root and arch reconstructions. He is Chief Investigator of multiple major international clinical trials and is a Director of the Sydney Heart Bank and the Centre for Heart Failure and Diseases of the Aorta. He has received multiple peer reviewed research grants from the NHMRC and NHF. He has more than 300 research publications over almost all areas of cardiac surgical research. He has held many other positions such as Head of Department RPAH, President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons, Co-Chair of the Cardiac Devices Committee for the Agency of Clinical Innovation, Ministry of Health NSW and various positions in the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Aortic Session II
Joseph Coselli, Baylor College of Medicine
Dr. Joseph S. Coselli, the Executive Vice-Chair of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, holds the Cullen Foundation Endowed Chair, and is Professor of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). He is Associate Chief of the Cardiovascular Service at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, located in the Houston,Texas Medical Center. He was Program Director of the Thoracic Surgery Residency at THI/BCM for 20 years and directs the Aortic Fellowhip Program at BCM.
Dr. Coselli specializes in aortic diseases. Mentored by Drs. E. Stanley Crawford, Denton Cooley, and Michael E. DeBakey, he has performed more than 10,500 aortic repairs, including over 3,800 thoracoabdominal aortic repairs. He has published more than 600 medical manuscripts and over 120 book chapters, delivered over 1,000 presentations in 39 countries, and performed aortic surgery in 13 countries. Dr. Coselli was the Past President of the American Aossication for Thoracic Surgery and currently serves as a Director of the Board of the AATS Foundation.
Dr. Coselli earned the Michael E. DeBakey Excellence in Research Award twice (2001, 2017) for his research on the surgical treatment of aortic aneurysms, aortic dissection, and Marfan syndrome. In 2018, he received the DeBakey Surgery Award (Michael E.DeBakey International Surgical Society) and the Ray C. Fish Award for Scientific Achievement (Texas Heart Institute). In 2019, he was honored with the Leader of Distinction Award from the Marfan Foundation, and in 2021, the Medical Honoree Hero with a Heart award for his 33-year commitment to The Marfan Foundation and the field of cardiovascular surgery.
In 2022, Dr. Coselli received the Baylor College of Medicine Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award for 40 years of distinguished service. In 2025, he was awarded Lifetime Achievement honors from both the AATS and Transformative Endovascular Decisions for his lifelong contributions to education and innovation in aortic surgery.

Tirone David, Toronto General Hospital
Doctor Tirone E. David is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto and the holder of the Melanie Munk Chair of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. Doctor David has published more than 400 scientific papers, 38 chapters in medical textbooks as well as 5 surgical textbooks. He has developed numerous operative procedures to treat patients with heart valve disease, complications of myocardial infarction, and thoracic aneurysms and prospectively followed these patients during the past 4 decades. One of these procedures is known as “David operation”. He has been a member of the editorial board of several medical journals. Doctor David is active member of numerous surgical and medical societies and is honorary member of 14 international medical societies. He was President of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery in 2004-2005 and the recipient of its Scientific Achievement Award in 2016, and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020. He was awarded the Order of Rio Branco from the Brazilian Government in 2018. He received the Order of Ontario in 1993 and the Order of Canada in 1996, the highest honor given to civilians in Canada. He was elected University Professor in 2004, the highest honor the University of Toronto bestows to its professors.
