Marc Moon, Baylor College of Medicine
Dr. Moon has been involved in AATS operations for more than a decade, originally as a program committee member for the Annual Meeting beginning in 2009. He has served on the Executive Board from 2012 to the present as Secretary, Vice President, and ultimately President at the 101st Annual Meeting in 2021. Dr. Moon's clinical focus in adult cardiac surgery includes aortic surgery and complex reoperative valvular surgery. Dr. Moon's educational platform focuses on advancing diversity and inclusion in the cardiothoracic community.
David Jones, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
Biography: David R. Jones, MD
Dr. Jones graduated Phi Beta Kappa from West Virginia University and received his medical degree from West Virginia University School of Medicine where he was AOA. He completed his Thoracic Surgery Residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC. In 1999, Dr. Jones joined the faculty at the University of Virginia where he became Professor and Vice-Chairman of the Department. In 2013 Dr. Jones was recruited to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as Chief of Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Jones is Professor & Chief of Thoracic Surgery and Executive Vice-chair of the Department of Surgery at MSKCC. He is also the Co-Director of the Fiona and Stanly Druckenmiller Center for Lung Cancer Research. He is the 105th Past-President of the AATS and serves as Chair of the AATS-MSKCC Thoracic Surgery Oncology Group (TSOG) for clinical trials, a cooperative clincal trial consortium sponsored by MSKCC & the AATS. He is recent past Chair of the NIH/NCI Tumor Progression and Metastasis (TPM) study section and currently serves on the NCI Board of Scientific Advisors. He serves on numerous national and international committees related to thoracic surgical research and clinical care.
Dr. Jones’s research focuses on mechanisms and drivers of metastases in lung cancer. His research has been funded by the NIH/NCI, Department of Defense, and the AACR. He has been the Principal Investigator or Co-PI on over 35 funded grants including multiple R01 awards from the NCI. He has published over 520 papers and has written over 35 book chapters. He was an early adopter of VATS anatomic resections and minimally-invasive esophagectomies and performs the majority of his operations using these minimally-invasive approaches.

Piroze Davierwala, Toronto General Hospital
Dr. Piroze Davierwala is the Director of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery at the Peter Munk Cardiac Center in Toronto General Hospital. He graduated from medical school in 1993 followed by a residency in General Surgery (1994-1996) and obtained his Masters in General surgery from the University of Pune, India. Thereafter, he did his residency in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (1997-2000), and obtained the degree of Master of Chirurgie from the University of Mumbai, India. Subsequently, he did a 3-year clinical fellowship at the University of Toronto, Canada. Following the completion of his training, he worked as a consultant in Cardiovascular Surgery in two private hospitals in the city of Pune, India. He was then recruited by the Division of Cardiac Surgery at the Leipzig Heart Center, Germany in 2009, where he was the Lead Senior Consultant and Director of Coronary Bypass surgery, until he moved to Toronto in 2021. During his 12-year tenure at this institute, predominantly renowned for minimally invasive cardiac surgery, he developed a keen interest and expertise in the entire spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures including mitral, tricuspid and aortic valve repairs, coronary artery bypass and aortic surgery. Additionally, he pioneered the development and establishment of the technique of multi-vessel total arterial minimally invasive coronary surgery with the use of bilateral internal thoracic arteries at the institute. Besides, he has tremendous experience in performing complex reconstructive surgery for endocarditis and complications of myocardial infarction among other procedures. His research work chiefly encompassing clinical studies and trials, has been published in numerous peer-reviewed international journals. He has over 100 publications and is an author of several book chapters as well. He is a member of esteemed societies such as the AATS, EACTS and ISMICS and is also a fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA).
Lokeswara Sajja, Star Hospitals, Hyderabad
Lokeswara Rao Sajja is a pioneering Cardiothoracic Surgeon in India, had his educational journey through prestigious institutions, culminating in advanced cardiovascular training under the guidance of Prof. Denton A Cooley at the Texas Heart Institute, Houston, Tx. He founded the Society of Coronary Surgeons, dedicated to advancing coronary surgery in India. As Chairman of the Sajja Heart Foundation, he received recognition as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Government of India in 2019. His innovative spirit led to the development of a mechanical prosthetic heart valve, eliminating the need for long-term oral anticoagulation (US and Indian patents awarded, waiting Animal implantation). He also designed the Mammary Artery Support Platform (MASP) to enhance BITA usage in CABG surgery. Dr. Sajja's surgical expertise spans around 20,000 open heart operations, and he spearheads multicenter randomized trials in Cardiac Surgery in India. His "PROMOTE Patency Study" gained global recognition as India's first multicenter randomized controlled trial in cardiac surgery. He currently leads the "PREDICT Study" with support from the Indian Council of Medical Research. He actively participates in Multi-Centre International trials in Cardiac Surgery. He is an active member of international societies, including AATS, STS, EACTS, and ASCVS, Dr. Sajja has presented numerous original research papers at international meetings. He has authored over 110 articles in peer-reviewed journals, serves as a guest reviewer for prominent journals, and holds editorial roles in respected publications. He is the Founder President of Society of Coronary Surgeons and current President of the Indian Association of Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgeons (IACTS) 2023.

General Session II: Mitral Valve Repair Principles
David Adams, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, New York
Dr. David H. Adams is the Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Professor and Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Cardiac Surgeon-in-Chief of the Mount Sinai Health System. He is internationally recognized as a thought leader in the field of mitral valve reconstruction, and leads a specialized team that performs over 400 mitral valve operations per year. He is a co-author of the acclaimed valve textbook, Carpentier’s Reconstructive Valve Surgery, and has co-invented multiple valve repair prostheses used throughout the world. He is the author of over 300 peer-reviewed publications, and is an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Adams was the 99th President of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
Ram Kumar Subramanyan, Children’s Nebraska/University of Nebraska Medical Center
Ram Kumar Subramanyan, MD, PhD, FACS is a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon-scientist. After finishing medical school in India, he completed his General Surgery training at the University of Southern California (“USC”) under Tom R. DeMeester, MD. He subsequently trained in Thoracic Surgery at USC and Congenital Cardiac Surgery at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, under Vaughn A. Starnes, MD. He also has a PhD from USC, studying membrane protein biology and cell-cell interaction.
Dr. Subramanyan is currently the Chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at Children’s Nebraska Omaha and Professor of Surgery at University of Nebraska Medical Center. In addition to practicing the full spectrum of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, he runs an extramurally funded research lab that studies cardiac outflow track development and cardiomyocyte biology. He participates in robust translational research initiatives, including being the site lead on regenerative therapy clinical trials for children with single right ventricle heart disease. Dr. Subramanyan has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications, authored several textbook chapters, and has delivered many invited lectures and presentations. He is the editor of the congenital section of the Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and is on the editorial board of three other major surgical journals. He has served on the study sections of various funding agencies, including the NIH and American Heart Association and has served as Chair of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Database. He is currenlty the Chair of Council on Quality and Research of the STS. He is also Treasurer of the Western Thoracic Surgical Association and participates in several committees in national organizations.

Aubrey C. Galloway, M.D.
Dr. Galloway is the Seymour Cohn Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine-NYU Langone Healthand, and Director of the Mitral Valve Repair Program. He attended Tulane School of Medicine, did his General Surgery Residency at the University of Colorado Medical Center, a research fellowship with Dr. Judan Folkman at Boston Children's Hospital, and his Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship at NYU Medical Center with Dr.Frank Spener. He joined the NYU faculty in 1985. Dr. Galloway is recognized as an expert in surgery in mitral valve repair and was an early developer of minimally invasive techniques for valve surgery. He has a long history clinical and translational research, invented several valve repair and replacement devices, and has published over 250 manuscripts. He was director of the cardiothoracic surgery residence program at NYU for 11 years and was Chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery for 15 years (2006-2021). Dr. Kazuhiro Yasufuku is an internationally known Thoracic Surgeon with specific expertise in minimally invasive thoracic surgery and minimally invasive diagnostic procedures. He is the Head of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the Toronto General Hospital, University Health Network. He is also Professor and Chair of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at University of Toronto. Ram Kumar Subramanyan, Children’s Nebraska/University of Nebraska Medical Center
Ram Kumar Subramanyan, MD, PhD, FACS is a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon-scientist. After finishing medical school in India, he completed his General Surgery training at the University of Southern California (“USC”) under Tom R. DeMeester, MD. He subsequently trained in Thoracic Surgery at USC and Congenital Cardiac Surgery at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, under Vaughn A. Starnes, MD. He also has a PhD from USC, studying membrane protein biology and cell-cell interaction.
Dr. Subramanyan is currently the Chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at Children’s Nebraska Omaha and Professor of Surgery at University of Nebraska Medical Center. In addition to practicing the full spectrum of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, he runs an extramurally funded research lab that studies cardiac outflow track development and cardiomyocyte biology. He participates in robust translational research initiatives, including being the site lead on regenerative therapy clinical trials for children with single right ventricle heart disease. Dr. Subramanyan has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications, authored several textbook chapters, and has delivered many invited lectures and presentations. He is the editor of the congenital section of the Seminars in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and is on the editorial board of three other major surgical journals. He has served on the study sections of various funding agencies, including the NIH and American Heart Association and has served as Chair of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Database. He is currenlty the Chair of Council on Quality and Research of the STS. He is also Treasurer of the Western Thoracic Surgical Association and participates in several committees in national organizations.

Belal Asaf, Medanta
Dr Belal Bin Asaf is a Thoracic (Chest) Surgeon who specialises in the treatment of surgical diseases of the chest involving the lungs, mediastinum, Trachea (Windpipe), esophagus (food pipe) and diaphragm. He is recognised nationwide as an expert and a leader in the field of minimally invasive thoracic surgery like Video-assisted Surgery (VATS / Key-Hole surgery) and robotic thoracic surgery. He specialises in and has a particular interest in minimally invasive surgery (VATS) for lung cancer and is one of the most experienced surgeons in the country for performing robotic thymectomy for both myasthenia gravis and thymoma. He is also amongst the very few surgeons in the country who perform surgery for Mesothelioma. He is frequently invited and has delivered dozens of lectures in various national and international conferences on VATS and Robotic Thoracic Surgery.
Kazuhiro Yasufuku, Toronto General Hospital
Dr. Kazuhiro Yasufuku is an internationally known Thoracic Surgeon with specific expertise in minimally invasive thoracic surgery and minimally invasive diagnostic procedures. He is the Head of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the Toronto General Hospital, University Health Network. He is also Professor and Chair of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at University of Toronto. He holds the RFG Pearson – RJ Ginsberg Chair in Thoracic Surgery and William Coco Chair in Surgical Innovation for Lung Cancer. He serves as Director of Endoscopy and Director of the Interventional Thoracic Surgery Program at the University Health Network.
Dr. Yasufuku has been a leader in the field of minimally invasive diagnostics and therapeutics for thoracic malignancy. He co-developed the Convex Probe Endobronchial Ultrasound in collaboration with Olympus and has successfully introduced the clinical application of EBUS-TBNA in Thoracic Oncology. His clinical interests include minimally invasive diagnostic and surgery for thoracic oncology and lung transplantation. He leads the Thoracic Robotic Surgery Program and GTx Program at the University Health Network.

I have trained in Surgical Oncology and have been a consultant thoracic surgical oncologist since 2019 at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. The thoracic surgery unit at our center deals with approximately 180 esophageal resections and 120 lung resections every year. I specialize in minimally invasive lung and esophageal surgery and complex mediastinal masses.

Dr. David H. Adams is the Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Professor and Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Cardiac Surgeon-in-Chief of the Mount Sinai Health System. He is internationally recognized as a thought leader in the field of mitral valve reconstruction, and leads a specialized team that performs over 400 mitral valve operations per year. He is a co-author of the acclaimed valve textbook, Carpentier’s Reconstructive Valve Surgery, and has co-invented multiple valve repair prostheses used throughout the world. He is the author of over 300 peer-reviewed publications, and is an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Adams was the 99th President of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
Marc Moon, Baylor College of Medicine
Dr. Moon has been involved in AATS operations for more than a decade, originally as a program committee member for the Annual Meeting beginning in 2009. He has served on the Executive Board from 2012 to the present as Secretary, Vice President, and ultimately President at the 101st Annual Meeting in 2021. Dr. Moon's clinical focus in adult cardiac surgery includes aortic surgery and complex reoperative valvular surgery. Dr. Moon's educational platform focuses on advancing diversity and inclusion in the cardiothoracic community.
